Hawthorne Steps Up !
Upper Maitland defeated Mount Forest 2-1 Monday night at the "Nest" in Howick on the strength of two goals from Cassie Hawthorne.
Hawthorne scored early in the second period of play on an unassisted shorthanded goal, but the Mustangs found themselves knotted at ones' by the break.
As the game closed in on the final buzzer coach Miller sent Douglas and Hussey out with Hawthorne for an offensive zone faceoff. Her intuition paid off as these three relentlessly forechecked the Rams defenders, causing their goalkeeper to make multiple saves. Then, after another flurry of action in front of the Rams net Hawthorne worked her way into the top of the faceoff circle to the left of the Rams meshed cage and fired the game winner with an assist going to Hussey on the play.
